Sylvia Bernice Baumgarten Cozzens, literary agent, and the wife of James Gould Cozzens, the author, died Monday of cancer in Stuart, Fla. She was 76 years old.

Mrs. Cozzens represented the leading authors of the time, from 1925 to 1957, as head of the book department at the Brandt & Brandt literary agency on Park Avenue. Among them were John Dos Passos, E. E. Cummings, Mary .McCarthy, Shirley Ann Grau, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Mr. Cozzens, who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for “Guard of Honor” in 1949. The Cozzens's were married in 1926.

Among the best‐selling books produced by her clients were, “The Egg and 1,” by Betty McDonald; “The Nun's Story,” by Kathryn Hulme; “The Lost Weekend,” by Charles Jackson and “The Silver Chalice,” by Thomas Costain.

Mrs. Cozzens was born in Washington and attended Hunter College. She was a founding member of the Society of Author's Representatives.
