HENRY J. WESSEL DIES SUDDENLY

This community was greatly shocked and saddened Friday morning March 3 when it became known that Henry J. Wessel, prominent business man and a leading citizen of Teutopolis for many years had died suddenly at his home about 7:45 am following a heart attack suffered at 7:15 am.

Henry John Wessel was born in Teutopolis on April 2, 1883 the son of the late Henry and Anna (Deyman) Wessel, making his age at the time of death 66 years, 11 months, and 1 day.

He attended the, Teutopolis schools and when a young man served in the, United States Navy from 1905-1909. During this term he was one of those selected to make the Good Will Tour around the world under the administration of Teddy Roosevelt.

On May 24, 1910 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Funneman in St. Francis church. To this union eight children were born of whom; seven survive. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marie, who died May 7, 1929 at the age of sixteen. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth, and his children Mrs. Cletus (Isabel) Merz of Effingham, Mrs. Lloyd (Rosanna) Walk and Mrs. Maurice (Julia) Walk of Sigel, Sister Theodora (Margaret) of Los Angeles, California, USA, Bernard, Norman and Theodore at home. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren besides a host of other relatives and friends

He was the business partner, of Louis Fulle in the firm of Wessel and Fulle grocery since March 2, 1915. His last day at work, Thursday, March 2, 1950, completed exactly 35 years of this partnership, which was the oldest existing business partnership in this community at the time.

He was very active in community affairs having served as fire chief of the Teutopolis volunteer fire department for many years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Francis Church, present secretary of the Catholic Knights of America and a stockholder of Worman Printery Incorporated.

The remains lay in state at the Habing funeral home in Teutopolis where the rosary was recited Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 pm and at 4:30 Sunday afternoon by members of the Teutopolis volunteer fire department.

Business places in the village closed during the time of funeral services which were held at 9 A.M. Monday in St. Francis of Assisi Church where a Requiem High Mass was sung by the Reverend Pastor Father Salvator Wegemer, O.F.M. Rev. George Faller of Sigel delivered the sermon. Servers at the Mass were: Frank Esker, Joe Adams, Bill Hardiek, Bill and Henry Lee Weis.

Flower carriers were grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and neighbors of the deceased.

Pallbearers were neighbor and businessmen: Clarence Esker, Fridolen Woermann, Ferd Weis, Ben Mihlbachler, Louis Hoedebecke and Roger Weber.

Burial was in St. Francis cemetery.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were his nieces, Mrs. John Ceily, Miss Frances Grote. and Mr and Mrs Henry Falk of St. Louis, his nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Schumacher of Webster Grove, Missouri and Mr and Mrs, Edward Schumacher and son Ralph of University City, Missouri, Mrs. Mary Willenborg and daughters, Mr. E. R. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Russel Uptmor and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Funneman, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Funneman, Mrs. Genevieve Weis, Laurence Rieman, WHliam Tolcb, Mrs. Louis Funneman and son, Mrs. Robert Schuette and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jansen and sons of Effingham, Joseph Funneman, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Schuette, Mr. Harry Schuette, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Springer, Mr. and Mrs Franklin Plata, Mrs. Lil Siemer, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Hoene and family of Sigel, Mrs, Wllace Bingaman. Mr. and Mrs. Foster Walk of Neoga and others whose names we did not get.
