Elizabeth was a hard working and devoted mother and wife, and a loving/soft hearted grandmother. When Elizabeth was about seven years old, her father died. Shortly after her father's death, her mother returned to Germany with three of her four daughters (Elizabeth, Margaret and Marie). Anna, her oldest daughter (about 16), remained in New York City and worked as a domestic servant. At that time many of the wealthy families in NYC hired young women as "domestics". Anna worked and saved enough money to bring Elizabeth and Margaret back to NYC when they were teenagers.
