Maria was born in Nevel, Russia on September 6, 1925. At the onset of World War II at the age of 16, she was taken by the Germans in Russia, separated from her parents and siblings, Alexander and Valentyna, and was taken near Kassel, Germany. There she met her future husband Jakub who was also a prisoner of the camp.
When the war ended in 1945 the couple were married on July 7, 1945 and stayed in a displaced person camp in Wildflecken, Germany. In 1949 they immigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Marinette area.
Maria was a devoted wife and mother who had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and spend time with her family, grandchildren, friends and her dogs. She did all the worrying for her family and friends. She enjoyed bird watching, especially cardinals and cooking Russian and Polish cuisine dishes that could never be duplicated.
Maria is survived by, her husband Jakub, 2 sons, Arthur (Mary) of Brookfield, WI. Robert (Kris) of Marquette, 3 daughters, Lucyna Welnetz of Two Rivers, Susana (Jim) Lacy of Waukesha, Janeta Clausen of Menominee, 7 grandchildren, Ginny, Carrie, Rachel, Richard, Laura, Paige and Ty. A great-grandchild, Kobe. A son-in-law, Duane, and her dog Misha.
Maria's burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Peshtigo.
