October 29, 1908, at age 29, Fred and his family set sail from Breman, Germany on the SS Chemnitz and arrived in the US at Baltimore, Maryland on November 12, 1908. They remainned aboard and continued their voyage to the port of Galveston, Texas, which they reached on November 20, 1908. Fred's brother George Hill, Jr with his wife and three sons, also arrived on this ship.
Their final destination was Marion County, Kansas, where their father George Hill, Sr had already immigrated in 1907.
One of Fred's first jobs was working for the railroad in Kansas. Fred's brother George who was living in Colorado, wrote to Fred saying "come to Colorado where good money could be made working in the beet fields". So Fred and family moved from Marion, Kansas to Ault, Colorado in 1925. Two months later Fred would die.
Per his translated German obituary, Fred and Mary had 11 children, 3 of the children preceded their father in death. He was survived by his wife, 1 son and 7 daughters.
