Jonas Mitchell was born near Manchester, England, April 1, 1815. At the age of fifteen, he was entered as an apprentice to learn the trade of blacksmith, which he followed until the age of twenty-seven.

Jonas was married in Lancashire County, England on 7 Mar 1836 to Mary Graves. In 1840, Jonas, with his family, emigrated to America, settling in Posey County, Indiana, where he lived for six years. The next six years were spent in Kentucky, Missouri and Iowa.

In 1852, the family came to Nebraska. He worked for the government as a blacksmith for the Pawnee Indians. He manufactured and repaired the gun hoes and simple agricultural implements that were furnished by the government.

Jonas and Mary were early pioneers of Nebraska and endured many hardships. The Indians were annoying in many ways, principally by begging and thieving. At one time, the Pawnees raided his stock-yard, driving off five oxen and a cow. None of the stock was recovered but during Lincoln's administration Jonas recovered pay for his stock.

Jonas and Mary had eight children - William and Catharine were born in England; James, Jane, Martha Ellen, Emma Ann, Thomas, Owen, and Fanny in the United States.

Jonas died in 1886 at the age of 70 years 9 months.
