Commander Hal Copple
ROCK HILL -- Commander Hal Copple, 96, a naval aviator, took off for his final flight from Rock Hill on March 3, 2011. He was born on a farm near Rosaile, Nebraska on June 18, 1914. Hal was the oldest of four children born to Harry and Johanna Copple. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marien; brother, James; and granddaughter, Tyree.
He graduated from high school in the midst of the Depression, working various jobs across the country before enlisting in the Navy in 1935. He served aboard the USS Langley and in 1939 was accepted into flight school at Pensacola, FL. He flew PBY planes in World War II and was also an instructor pilot. He retired with over 12, 000 hours as a pilot, often under perilous conditions. He retired to Lincoln, NE where he resided until 1998, when he and Marien moved to Rock Hill, SC to be close to family. He always enjoyed sharing stories of his naval career and working with various mechanical inventions and projects. Most of all, he loved to interact with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by daughter, Pat West of Pembroke, VA; son, Dr. Hal Copple and wife, Lynne of Rock Hill, SC; daughter, Barbara Bacon and husband, Doug of Wheatridge, CO; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate his life will be held 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Hill, SC. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 or Grace Lutheran Church, Bell Choir, 426 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Interment to be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.
