Herman Heinrich Hoefelmann arrived in New York City on 24 Aug 1867 on the ship "Union" from Bremen Germary. Accompanying him were his sons John Henry and John Bernhard and daughters, Anna Ida and Minna. Arriving just 12 days earlier, was a son, Henry b 1840, on the ship "Weser". At least two of the sons commonly used "Henry" as a given name which can be quite confusing when looking at old records.

On the 1870 Williamsburg, Dodge county, Wisconsin census, Herman (aka Henry) was living with his son Henry, wife Anna, and their unnamed child and another son, Bernard, age 13.

According to family research, Herman married Catherine Sophia Meyer on 24 May 1837 at Grosenkneten, Oldenburg, Germany. She appears to have died in Germany in 1866 before the family immigrated to the U.S.
