MARTIN STEHLE
died in this city on September 28th (1916) at 11 A.M. after a sickness of several months. Funeral services conducted at the Perry Christian Church on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the presence of a large audience composed of relatives and friends. Services conducted by Rev. J.H. Coil, of Shelbina, assisted by Rev. J.E. Kerr. Rev. Coil was a former pastor of Mr. Stehle, and a couple of years ago was asked by the deceased if it was possible he wanted Rev. Coil to conduct his funeral service. Burial in Lick Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Stehle was born in St. Louis February 25th, 1847, aged 69 years, 7 months and 3 days. He was married to Adalina Hocar on June 28th, 1870, who passed away about six and a half years ago. To this union was born six children, two passed away and one son and three daughters living: William N., Perry; Mrs. Mamie Deschamp, St. Louis County; Mrs. L.M. Dunfee and Miss Margaret Stehle, of Perry, and three grandchildren: Nelson Stehle, Amelia Stehle and Lucille Dunfee.
Mr. Stehle was of French descent, his parents were reared in France. When 16 years old he entered as an apprentice to the tinner’s trade, serving seven years, at the end of which time he started in the tinner’s business for himself at Kirkwood, now a suberb sic] of St. Louis. A few years later he suffered the loss of his business by fire. He took courage again and started in business. During the money panic in 1881 he lost everything he possessed. He then went to Colorado, where he and his family lived awhile, moving back to St. Louis. In 1885 he and his family moved to Perry. He worked as a tinner for the firm of DeLaporte, Ward & Co., for several years. In the early spring of 1893 he and his son William N., engaged in business. Later in 1901 they installed the first telephone exchange in Perry, which is now owned by Wm. N. Stehle. Mr. Stehle retired from business on account of sickness last year. In a brief way we have chronicled a few of the important events of a useful life of one of our business men. He was one of the most conscientious men the writer ever met, and tried to be honest and upright in all of his dealings. He was a good man, and his host of friends will ever remember and miss him.
To the bereaved we extend heartfelt sympathy.
Those who attended the funeral from a distance: Robt. Riley and wife, Quincy; Julius and Leon DeLaporte, Hannibal; Jno. DeLaporte and wife, Laddonia; Clyde Johnson and wife, Mexico; Geo. DeLaporte, wife and son Sam, Center; Adolph Thomassen and Jno Deschamp and wife, of St. Louis County; Mrs. Robt. Dye and daughter, Amelia Stehle, of Paris.
