Eugene Lehfeldt, 91, of Gustine died of natural causes Sunday at Memorial Hospital, Los Banos.

Mr. Lehfeldt was a native of Montana. He lived in Gustine 63 years. He retired in 1974 after a 35-year career as an agriculture and social studies teacher at Gustine High School. He was a founding member and current president of the Gustine Historical Society, elder at Gustine Presbyterian Church and a member of the California Retired Teachers Association. In 1961, he received the California Agriculture Teachers Association Star Teacher Award. He was a 1930 graduate of Livingston High School and a 1938 graduate of the University of California at Davis. He was an avid gardener and community volunteer. He was a devotee of local and family history. He was a fan of the 49ers and Giants. He never missed his class reunions. He was a scorekeeper for Gustine High School basketball games and tournaments for 50 years. He played horseshoes and took great delight in being named "Rookie Pitcher of the Year," by the Northern California Horseshoe Pitchers Association at the age of 89.

He is survived by his wife, Loy Ellis Lehfeldt of Gustine; children, Bea Sousa of Muncie, Ind., Bev Halliday of Fair Oaks and Barb Engvall of Selah, Wash.; brothers, Eldor Lehfeldt of Princeton, Julius Lehfeldt of Yuma, Ariz., and Bill Lehfeldt of Potomac, Md.; sister, Mary Jean Bird of Red Bluff; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gustine Veterans Memorial Hall. The Neptune Society of Central California, Fresno, in charge of arrangements.

Remembrances may be made to the Conrad and Loy E. Lehfeldt Scholarship Fund, in care of Gusto, 585 Fourth Ave., Gustine 95322; the Gustine Presbyterian Church, 399 Sixth St., Gustine 95322; or the Gustine Historical Society, 803 Laurel Ave., Gustine 95322.
