Liselotte Herrmann was often called 'Lilo'born in Berlin into a middleclass family with liberal views and a strong belief in the freedom of people. Herrmann studied chemistry and later biology and was an articulate student with an enquiring mind. She became a member of the German Communist Party (KPD) in 1934, this Party was now banned by the Nazis who had come to Office in 1933.Herrmann was a committed anti-nazi and a very active member of the KPD.
Herrmann obtained detailed information about the production of weapons and the manufacture of munitions at the Dolnier factory and details of the Underground Factory near Celle. All the information was sent to the KDP offices in Switzerland and then sent to Moscow.
Herrmann was arrested on 7th December 1935 and held for 19months. Her husband had previously died in Gestapo custody on the 20th December 1933.
She was charged with High Treason and Conspiracy to Commit High Treason and sentenced to death by the People's Court*.
Transferred to Plotzensee Prison Berlin and executed by guillotine on the 20th June 1938.
After the War in East Germany which was under Soviet controle named many schools, Streets and Institutions after her.
During 1990 after German Reunification many of the Streets were re-named, in an effort to erase any reference to communism.
*The People's Court was in reality the Court of Adolf Hitler, all the Judges were committed nazis and did comply with the mandate of the dictator. Most defendants who appeared on the charge of High Treason, were flanked by two uniformed police officers, who supported the prisoner, who was unable to stand unaided in most cases. The Judges were fully aware of the Gestapo's methods of interrogation and the severe beatings used, to obtain information. Any Judge who failed to give the death sentence in any case of High Treason, was removed from the Judicial System and not allowed to practice law. Such was the power and influence of the nazi dictator..Adolf Hitler over the German Legal System.
