He made his stage debut in London in 1919 and in the United States in 1921 and appeared in many musicals including "Rose Marie" (1924), "The Vagabond King" (1925), "The Three Musketeers" (1928), "Showboat" (1930), "Billy Budd," "A Doll's House," "Affair of Honor," "I Married An Angel" (1938) and "A Patriot For Me" in 1969. He was married to British stage actress Edith Wright.
