Private Frank Berwald was born in Poland in 1850

Unknown when he arrived in the United States, but was a blacksmith by trade.

Enlisted in the 7th U.S. Cavalry on 25 January 1873.

He was in Co. E 7th Cav. in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. At the start of the battle he was with the pack train a few miles in the rear. However, he saw battle on what is known as Reno Hill with, Marcus Reno and Frederick Benteen.
