Enlisted 9 Sep 1864 (credited to Weybridge) mustered in as Pvt. to Co. B 2nd Vermont Infantry 9 Sep 1864, and mustered out on 19 Jun 1865. He also served in the 176th New York Volunteer Infantry.

From the Rutland Daily Herald, March 8, 1915:
George D. Butterfly, an old resident of this vicinity, died yesterday morning at 2 o'clock at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. W.E. Flynn, No. [illegible] South Main street. He suffered a paralytic shock two weeks ago, and never rallied. Mr. Butterfly was born at Whitehall, N.Y., January 8, 1847. He joined the 176th New York regiment when he was only 14 years old, and was one of the youngest soldiers in the service of the Union during the Civil war.
After the war he lived in Shrewsbury, and engaged in farming until 10 years ago when his health failed, and he came to Rutland. He is survived by a wife who was Miss Ellen Plumley, three sons, Charles, Frank and Eugene Butterfly, and a daughter, Mrs. E.J. Lloyd, all of Rutland. He was a member of Roberts post, G.A.R. The Grand Army ritual will be observed at the house tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, and the funeral will be held at the North Shrewsbury church at 1.30 in the afternoon. Burial will be in Northam.
