Don, the son of Harve Manac and Loney H. Manac of Fargo GA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 16, 1969 Jacksonville FL. He arrived in Vietnam on July 28, 1970 and was assigned to Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation PIKENS FOREST in the central Que Son Mountains a squad sized patrol moving through heavy vegetation up the southeast side of Hill 565 in Que Son District encountered an NVA L-shaped ambush. The patrol was hit with heavy machine gun and automatic weapons fire as the Marine returned fire they called for supporting fire and reinforcements. Contact was finally broken by the retreating enemy, nine Marines were wounded and one man was MIA during the fire fight with the enemy force. He was last seen retrieving and assisting in loading casualties on helicopters. A search of the area was made and his body recovered, PFC Manac had been killed in actioin as a result of hostile fire.
