Wilbur H. Emmert was born on November 3, 1890, in Nachusa Township, Lee County, Illinois, to Sarah Jane (Sadie) Lady, age 30, and Lurton Saylor Emmert, age 24. He had three siblings, two of whom grew up with him on the family farm, and a third who died an infant.

THE EMMERTS OF MARYLAND

Wilbur's branch of the Emmert family came to America from Bavaria in 1732 when Johann Jorg Friedrich "George" Emmert (1718-1796) stepped off a small ship named 'Loyal Judith' in colonial Philadelphia. George and his wife, Eve Maria Graff, became naturalized British subjects in 1751, but then disavowed the king in 1778 when George pledged allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania before Judge Peter Spycker in Berks County.

George Emmert's son was Leonard Emmert, the beloved "Old Pathfinder" of the Brethren church. Leonard was born to George and Eve Maria in Bethel Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America in about 1745. He served as a militiaman in the Revolutionary War before turning away from Lutheranism and in 1798 moving his family to Washington County, Maryland to join many other followers of Alexander Mack settling there. Leonard Emmert's impact on the growth of the Church of the Brethren would reverberate down through the generations, and would reach into Illinois, Wisconsin, and even overseas to India and Denmark.

Leonard Emmert was Wilbur's 3d great-grandfather. In the two generations following Leonard, many members of the family emigrated to Illinois in the 1840s, then to Iowa in the 1860s and 1870s. That is how Wilbur came to be born in Illinois in 1890.

A LIFE LIVED

Men Wilbur's age had to register for the World War I draft, and he did in June 1917. Wilbur evidently did not serve in the war, but his little brother, George, was a private in the U.S. Army, 319th Infantry, and returned alive from France in 1919.

Wilbur married Myrtle Herbst in about 1917. (Wilbur said in June 1917 he was single when he registered for the WWI draft. In the 1930 census Wilbur said he was 27 when he married, and Myrtle said she was 26. We have no record of where they were married, but Lee County, Ill. seems most likely.)

A son, Gerald E., was born to Wilbur and Myrtle in 1921 in Nachusa Township. It is unclear if the couple had any other children.

Wilbur's father passed away on May 2, 1930, in Franklin Grove, Illinois, at the age of 63.

In 1940 Wilbur was still farming his own place in Nachusa Township. However, by 1942 the family had moved into town in Franklin Grove, Illinois. Then in 1949 the family was living in Dixon, Illinois, and Wilbur was working as a 59-year-old laborer for the state highway department.

Wilbur's mother died in 1949 at the age of 89.

California death records show that Wilbur died on August 1, 1956, in Alameda County, California, when he was 65 years old. We do not know why he was in California. His body was returned to Illinois for burial in the family cemetery not far from the farmhouse where he was born.
