Myrtle Herbst was born on May 24, 1891, probably in South Dixon Township, Illinois, to Cora Virginia Kime, age 27, and Edgar Franklin Herbst, age 32.

Myrtle was probably one of three children who grew up on the family farm, and with the unusual distinction of having a live-in domestic servant (according to the 1900 federal census).

According to the 1940 census Myrtle only went as far the 8th grade in school. However, in 1910, at the age of 19, she declared no employment on the federal census.

Myrtle married Wilbur H. Emmert in about 1917 when she was 26 years old. (Wilbur said in June 1917 he was single when he registered for the WWI draft. In the 1930 census Wilbur said he was 27 when he married, and Myrtle said she was 26. We have no record of where they were married, but Lee County, Ill. seems most likely.)

A son, Gerald E., was born to Wilbur and Myrtle on September 6, 1921, probably in Nachusa Township. It is unclear if the couple had other children.

The 1930 census found the family living on an owned grocery farm in Nachusa Township. A 23-year-old public schoolteacher named Edna Hoff was lodging in their home. Wilbur farmed and Myrtle kept house.

1940 found a similar situation, except the family had no lodger.

The 1942 WWII draft registration showed that Wilbur was still farming. However, a city directory reported that by 1949 Wilbur and Myrtle had moved off the farm and into a home in town at 1717 W 3rd in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. And Wilbur had exchanged the demanding life of a farmer, for the demanding life of a 59-year-old state highway department laborer.

California death records show that Wilbur died on August 1, 1956, in Alameda County, California, when he was 65 years old. We do not know why he was in California. His body was returned to Illinois for burial in the family cemetery not far from the farmhouse where he was born.

According to a February 19, 1958 newspaper obituary, Myrtle died at home in Dixon, Illinois, when she was 67 years old. Her remains were interred next to Wilbur's at the Emmert Cemetery.
