John Irving Stowe, 80, a famed boatbuilder of the Outer Banks, and retired fisherman, died at his home at Hatteras at 10 p.m. Wednesday after an illness of four years.

He was the son of the late Ira Midgett Stowe and Millie Midgett Stowe and the husband of Mrs. Jeannette Stowe. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Etta Peele of Manteo, Mrs. Catherine S. Robertson of Williamston, Mrs. Agnes Scarborough of Avon, Mrs. Mabel Mead and Walter B. Stowe, both of Norfolk, Preston and Harvey Stowe, both of Hatteras; and by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were indefinite at this writing.

The funeral of the late John Irvin Stowe, prominent Hatteras citizen who died Wednesday at his home, was directed by Twiford's Funeral Home Friday at 1:30 in the Hatteras Methodist Church by Rev. Sparrow, Methodist minister, and Rev. W.D. Barkley, pastor of the Assembly of God Church of Avon. Burial was in the family cemetery at Hatteras.

The pallbearers were Levin Stowe, Leonard Gilliken, Donald Oden, dexter Stowe, Norman Quidley and Roy Gray.
