Another Pioneer Gone.

[Note. – The following sketch, prepared to accompany the announcement of the death of the subject, was inadvertently omitted, but we deem it of sufficient interest to appear now.]

Peter Bergen was born in Bergen County, in the State of New Jersey, in the month of November 1788. He was of Low Dutch decent, his ancestors having immigrated to the New World in an early period of Colonial history, and from them was Bergen County so named.

At the age of eight years, his father and mother moved to Kentucky, and settled in the vicinity of Cole Springs, in Mercer County. He afterwards went from there to Shelby County, where he was married to Mrs. Anna Bice in 1810, with whom he lived up to 1853, when she died.

In October, 1830, he moved to Johnson County and settled on the farm now occupied by his son, Samuel Bergen, one and half miles west of Hopewell, where he continued to reside until the day of his death, which took place on the 12th of this month.

Peter Bergen was a quiet, pleasant and agreeable man, an excellent neighbor and in every respect a worthy citizen. We knew him for thirty years or more and do not remember to have ever heard a word spoken derogatory to his character as a citizen or a Christian. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church for forty years and died as he had lived, firm in the faith of his fathers.
