Dennis "Denny" Monroe, 66, of Bluffton, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He had been diagnosed with cancer in October of this year.
Born in Bluffton to Richard and Gertrude I. "Trudy" (Barnes) Monroe on May 12, 1941, he married Ruth Ann McAlhaney in Vera Cruz on Feb. 19, 1966; she survives.
He was a 1959 graduate of Bluffton High School. After graduation from high school, Mr. Monroe worked at Franklin Electric Co. for four years and then served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a barber for several years after graduating from the National Barber School in Indianapolis. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in September 2000 after 31 years of service.
He was a member, and current president, of the Bluffton Optimist Club. He was a board member of the Wells County Historical Society and the Bluffton Free Street Fair Board, of which he served as president for six years. He was also a member of the board of trustees at First Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to the wife are his mother in Berne; two sons, Scott A. (Geraldine) Monroe of Frisco, Texas, and Kurt A. (Jennifer) Monroe of Tuscon, Ariz.; two sisters, Rebecca (Charles III) Decker of Bluffton and Lucinda (Larry) Waters of Lafayette; one brother, Mitch (Kathy) Monroe of Decatur; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda K. Monroe.
Funeral services will be at 10.30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Bluffton. Calling hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home and one hour prior to service Monday at the church.
Burial will be at Six Mile Cemetery, in Bluffton, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 111 and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
Preferred memorials are to the First Baptist Church.
