Christine (Erhart) Johnson was the first child of Martin and Christina Erhart born in the United States of America. Christine’s mother, Christina Erhart, was pregnant with Christine when the family emigrated from Austria – Hungary to the United States in 1906.

Christine was one of nine children in the Martin Erhart family to live in the United States. Her mother Christina bore a total of thirteen children. Unfortunately, four children died in Europe before the family of five immigrated to America. Christine was followed by five more siblings who were born in the United States. All the children born in the United States were immediately United States citizens by birth. The older children born in Europe soon became naturalized citizens as did both parents, Martin and Christina Erhart.

The Erhart family purchased a small farm near the city of Mansfield, Ohio in an area commonly known as East Mansfield. Christine and her siblings worked on the farm until becoming of age. They then were expected to become independent and self-sufficient.

Christine began work as a domestic to the W.J. Tappan family. W.J. Tappan was the founder of The Tappan Stove Company located in Mansfield, Ohio. Christine so endeared herself to the Tappan family, that she was often invited to join the family for weekend trips aboard their yacht at Lake Erie. These invitations would often include her husband Robert Chester Johnson joining her with the Tappan family aboard ship. She maintained this job until she started her own family with the birth of her child in 1932.

Christine and Robert Chester “Chet” Johnson married July 10, 1929. Christine and Chet Johnson were very social through starting in the late 1920’s into the late 1930. They belonged to many social organizations and where known for their grace on the dance floor.

Christine was a member of the Ruth Chapter 17 Order of Easter Star, a Freemasonry related fraternal organization open to both men and women. This was a shared interest her and husband Chet. With the passing of time, as her family grew, more of her time and energy were directed towards her family and household. Christine was able to remain a wife, homemaker and mother as she brought up all three of her children.

Christine was a religious person and a member of various fundamental churches during her life time. She was a constant reader of the Bible and was often described as having a “Christian heart of gold” by friends and family.

With the addition of grandchildren to the family, Christine’s love and devotion were often lavished on the grandchildren and their happiness. They brought Christine great happiness in her later years.
