Gerhard was the youngest son of Heinrich and Anna Bessler Wessling Gerwing. He was born in Minnesota, immigrating to Canada with his parents and older brothers in May 1910.
During a goose hunting outing near his home in Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan, Canada, he caught pneumonia and subsequently died. He was only 16 years old.
He is buried near his parents at St. Anthony's Cemetery.
