Lucille Carroll was born on Wednesday, September 20, 1916 in Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota along with a twin sister Louise. Attendant at the birth was L.C. Jurgens, MD. She was the daughter of Francis LeRoy Carroll and his wife Ruth Baird (Sehn) Carroll.
Lucille was baptized in the Bethel Lutheran Church, corner of Addie and Wall Streets in Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota on Sunday, April 6, 1930, the Rev. O.G. Malmin officiating. Baptismal sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Ole Storsve, Nellie Storsve, Miss C. Storman and Myrtle Stonefelt. Two years later, on March 27, 1932, she was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church.
Lucille attended the Lead Public Schools, receiving an Eighth Grade Diploma on January 16, 1931 and later graduating from Lead High School on May 31, 1935.
Lucille was married to Joseph Weldon "Shorty" Toms at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lead, South Dakota on November 25, 1936.
Lucille Toms passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Deadwood, South Dakota at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 1977. Cause of death was cancer of the pancreas, for which she had been receiving treatment for several months.
Funeral services for Lucille were held at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Lead at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 1977. Officiating at the service were the Rev. Russell Olsen, who had married her and Joseph Weldon Toms in 1936, and the Rev. Emil Greiner, the current pastor. Casket bearers were Bill Ausmann and Wendell Handley, with whom she had worked for several years in the principal's office at Lead High School, as well as old family friends Maurice "Moe" Asmussen, Oliver "Ole" Krause, Lee Abrahamson, and Henry Phillips. Mrs. JoAnn Tusha served as organist and Mrs. Cathy Teeslink as solist, singing "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord if My Shepherd." Interment was in Mountain Lawn Cemetery outside of Lead, under the direction of Wells-Ruth Funeral Home of Deadwood. A memorial was established by the family for an annual Lead High School scholarship.
