George A. Helfrich died of Tuberculosis contracted during service in the U.S. Army during World War I. George went into the hospital for treatment of pneumonia and was accidentally placed in the Tuberculosis ward. He died in Fort Lyons Soldiers Home outside of Las Animas, Colorado and was buried in Ellinwood, Barton, Kansas.
