U.S. Congressman. Raised on a farm, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced to practice law in Hillsboro, Missouri. He was collector of revenue for Jefferson County in 1872, a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1876-77), served in the Missouri State Senate in 1878 and a member of the Democratic State central committee, (1886-88). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 66.
