Son of Sally Elizabeth Everett (1873-1937) and Robert Colon Fellows (1862-1918). His siblings included: Robert Francis "Frank", Walter Herman, Mae, Albert M., and Alma N. His father was born in North Carolina and his mother in Georgia. In 1900, he was living in Lowery, Laurens County, Georgia with his parents and siblings on the farm they owned. The household included: Colan, born February 1862; Sallie, born June 1872; Lewis, born September 1890; Francis, born August 1893; Walter, born July 1895; and May, born September 1897. He married Mattie Darsey around 1910 and they had 13 children.

He registered for the World War I draft in Chester, Dodge County, Georgia. At that time, he was described as tall and slender, with gray eyes and brown hair. By 1920, his mother was widowed and living in Chester, Dodge County, Georgia with his twin siblings Alma and Albert, age 15. In 1930, he and his family were living in Hampton Mill, Laurens County, Georgia where they were renting a farm.
