OBITUARY Iron River Reporter May 12 1939 "Young Matron Claimed Today: Mrs. Walter Tarnowski, 29, Former Mame [Mamie] Bernhardt, Dies At Hospital"
Mrs. Walter Tarnowski, 29, of 217 Fifth avenue, died early this morning at the General hospital, Stambaugh, following the birth of a baby. The child, a baby girl, survives.
She was the former Mame [Mamie] Bernhardt, daughter of Christian Bernhardt, Iron River township clerk, and Mrs. Bernhardt.
Born in December, 1910, she attended township schools and after studying at the Iron River high school, she entered the Menominee Agricultural college, a branch of Michigan State college, and completed her course there.
She was married on Feb. 6, 1937.
Surviving her are a son Loren, age 18 months, three sisters, Agnes, Dorothy and Mrs. Olaf Vicklund, and four brothers, Vernon, Harold, Carl and Frederick.

FUNERAL NOTICE Iron River Reporter May 16 1939 "Conduct Last Rites For Mrs. Tarnowski"
Funeral rites were held from the home on Fifth avenue yesterday afternoon for Mrs. Walter Tarnowski, 29, the former Mame [Mamie] Bernhardt, who died early Friday following the birth of a baby daughter.
Rev. Morton W. Merrell, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiated. Burial was in Resthaven cemetery.
Mrs. Tarnowski is survived by her baby daughter, her husband, one son, Loren, age 18 months, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Bernhardt of the Nash district in Iron River township, three sisters, Agnes, Dorothy and Mrs. Olaf Vicklund, and four brothers, Vernon, Harold, Carl and Frederick.
She attended the Presbyterian Sunday school taught by Mrs. John Christian in the Nash district when a girl. After studying at Iron River schools, she completed a course at a state agricultural college in Menominee.
Active when younger in 4-H club work, she was well known to young people throughout Iron county and this section of the Upper Peninsula.

To Christine and Christian were born eight children including Mamie (died 1939) who married Walter Tarnowski of Iron River.
