Fred Bernhardt, the son of Iron River Pioneers, was born in Iron River, March 15, 1914. He graduated from Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University, and taught at Cooks, Michigan and Iron Mountain, Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946 in the 81st 2nd Bn, Co. B, 2nd Army in the South Pacific. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1946 to 1968 in the Extension Service (Michigan State University).
He married Sofia Ojala on July 14, 1941. They had three children: John, born November 15, 1947; James, born October 28, 1948; and Anna (Swiniuchowski), born February 1, 1954.
