Valentine William (Val) Gerhardt, 78, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth Vogel Gerhardt; and sisters, Eva Gerhardt and Eleanor Stein.

Mr. Gerhardt retired from Powers Fence Company and served in the United States Navy.

Surviving are his wife, Violet M. Gerhardt; daughter, Donna G. Adams and husband, Ronald, of Chester, Va.; grandchildren, Melinda Leigh Vaughan and husband, Jesse, and Jenna Marie Adams; stepchildren, Carl Wymer and wife, Virginia, of Fincastle, and Catherine Paitsel, of New Castle; step grandchildren, Allen Dalton and wife, Rita, of Bedford, Lisa Temple and husband, Sammy, of New Castle, and Tim Dalton, of New Castle; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Muth and Rose Gerhardt; and brothers, Stanley Gerhardt and wife, Lorraine, and Mathew Gerhardt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society . Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2011, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Rick Via. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Simpson Funeral Home.
