Wlodzimierz (Volodymyr/ Walter) Mnich passed away at the age of 79 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was predeceased by his wife, Zofia Mnich; and his oldest daughter, Leokadia Witkowska. He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Miroslaw and Wladyslawa Mnich (Debnica Kaszubska, Poland), Jerry and Tania Mnich (Toronto, Canada), Piotr and Ola Mnich (Toronto, Canada), and Anetka and Mirek Galecki (Endicott). He is also survived by twelve loving grandchildren: Alina Witkowska, Katarzyna Jareniowska, Dorota Witkowska, Michal Mnich, Piotr Mnich, Natalia Mnich, Igor Mnich, Anna Mnich, Kasia Mnich, Aleksander Mnich, Anya Galecki, and Michael Galecki; three beautiful great-granddaughters: Julia, Malina, and Jagoda; a sister, Emilia Lewkowicz; nephew, Roman Lewkowicz and his family (Johnson City); as well as many other relatives in the U.S., Canada, Poland and Ukraine. Volodymyr was born on June 24, 1929 in Ulucz, Ukraine (currently Poland).

He was born to a poor farming family, and as a young boy endured the horrifying results of ongoing political conflicts between Russia, Poland, and Germany. World War II prevented him from completing his education as a boy, but as a young adult he received a certification from a painter's trade school and became a very successful owner of a painting business. He also taught the trade to his three sons, who also worked with him for many years.

In 1989, he immigrated with his daughter Anetka to the U.S., where he worked as a janitor for Johnson City High School. In 2000, Volodymyr also became a U.S. Citizen. Volodymyr loved music and was a self-taught violin player and violin-maker.

While living in Poland, he was a member of several bands, performing at many events, weddings, and festivals. He also loved dancing, gardening, and was an avid believer in natural medicine. He was a member of the Sacret Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Johnson City, where he sang in the church choir and played violin in a performance group.

The family would like to thank our cousin, Roman Lewkowicz and his family, and a very special neighbor, Paul Tisdell, for providing a tremendous amount of support during his time of illness. We would also like to thank Meals on Wheels volunteers, Lourdes Hospice nurses, and Absolut Care Nursing Home employees for their dedicated care.

A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 5th, at Laskowski Funeral Home and at 10am at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, where a Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Rev. Teodor B. Czabala, Jr. Burial will be held at the Parish Cemetery, Castle Creek. The family will receive friends at Laskowski Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan 4, from 4-6:30pm, where Fr. Czebala will recite the Prayer Service (Parastas) at 6:30 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church Building Fund, 230 Ukrainian Hill Rd., Johnson City, New York 13790.
