Mrs. Isidore (Rita) Harpenau, 83, of Remsen died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at her home after a lengthy illness.
A funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. The Fisch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harpenau was born September 30, 1916, at rural Granville, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Marx) Colling. She was raised in the Granville area and received her education at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Granville.
She married Isidore Harpenau on June 10, 1941, at Granville. They made their home near Le Mars, where they farmed until 1945, when they moved to near Remsen to farm. They retired and moved into Remsen in 1982.
Rita was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Missionary Association of Catholic Women, Ladies Catholic Order of Foresters, and Happy Siesta Health Care Center Auxiliary. She enjoyed writing, quilting, crossword puzzles, and playing cards.
Surviving are her husband, Isidore of Remsen; seven daughters and their husbands, Madonna and Lynn Nuebel of Le Mars, Ia., Nancy and Leon Peterson of Bloomington, Minn., Julie and Bob Layeux of Rockford, Ill., Sara and Dennis Gralapp of Remsen, Grace and Jim Rutan of Port Charlotte, Fla., Susan and Randy McCall of Ord, Nebr. and Colleen and Jack Meyer of St. Paul, Minn.; four sons and their wives, Ken and Jane of Gretna, Nebr., Ned and Jane and Joe and Marcia, all of Remsen, and Steve and Lynda of Omaha, Nebr.; 33 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Catherine Haverkamp of Remsen, Marian Pottebaum of Marcus, Ia., Sister Mary Ramona OSF of Dubuque, Ia., Agnes and her husband Dick LaBahn of Merrill, Ia., and Florence and her husband Bob Smid of Granville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mark, when a young child; a sister, Clara, in infancy; and two brothers, Norbert and John Colling.
Casket bearers were grandsons.
