Josef Kindel was an officer of the "Deutscher Sicherheitsdienst" (the intelligence agency of the German SS). He was involved in interrogations, torture and executions of members of the Dutch resistance movement. He was known to have his dog, a German Shepherd named Astrid, attack prisoners on his command. The headquarters of the Sicherheitsdienst in Groningen was the "Scholtenhuis", also known as the "House of terror". After the war he died in a Dutch prison of a brain hemorrhage, yet it's been stated that he was thrown down a set of stairs by Dutch prison guards while his hands had been tied on his back.
