John Milton Bowers was born in 1842 and named for his uncle, John Milton Taylor, a New York merchant. He was know as J. Milton by his family and friends, even on his gravestone it is J. Milton Bowers. He was a respected citizen of Maine, Broome, New York, throughout his life, took an active part in community affairs and kept a store there for a short time. He had an attractive personality and was noted for his caustic wit which he inherited from his grandfather Andrew Taylor. For some time, while a bachelor, he resided with his sister Achsah Ann Bowers in the family house at Bowers Corners (near Maine, N.Y.). In mid- life he married a widow but had no children. He died of tuberculosis at the age of fifty-eight in 1900. Tuberculosis was a tendency inherited perhaps from the Dinsmore ancestry. (Ref: Our American Ancestry, written by Frederick Taylor Gates)

John Milton Bowers married widow Mary Jemina (Harmon) Allen on 27 March 1870 in Castle Creek, Chenango, New York, widow of Hector Allen (1831-1858) and daughter of Gurdon Harmon (1801-1843) and Laura Etta Barnes (1808-1891). They had no children.
