ANDREW STEFFEN, 70, DIES
Cigar Manufacturer Succumbs to Heart Disease at Home on New Jersey Street.
Andrew Steffen, cigar manufacturer and one of the best-known and most admired figures in Indianapolis for many years, died yesterday afternoon of heart disease, at his home, (3?) North New Jersey street. He was 70 years old.
Mr. Steffen, better known as "Andy," operated a cigar and tobacco shop at 402 East Washington street and lived in apartments over the shop. Born at Madison, Ind., March 4, 1850, he lived in that city until June 14, 1870, when he married Miss Barbara Pfau and removed to Indianapolis. He entered the cigar manufacturing business in 1875 and continued at the same location on the northeast/corner of New ersey and Washington streets for forty-five years.
Counselor to Youths.
His shop was popular several years ago for his cigars and for his own personality and comradeship. Many who are now business and professional men of Indianapolis found Mr. Steffen a sympathizing friend and counselor in their youthful troubles. Public spirited and active in politics, he was urged to enter the mayorial race on the Democratic ticket on several occasions, but declined this as well as political appointments.
Four children survive: Charles L. Steffen, Elmer A. Steffen, Miss Mary A. Steffen and Mrs. Edward A. Rink, all of Indianapolis. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
