Walter B. Ziel, age 82, of Adams, WI, died at home on September 2, 2005. ''Zeke'' was born May 19, 1923, in Chicago, IL, to the late Joseph and Stella Ziel. He graduated from St. Rita High School in 1941. Walt served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, from January 1943 to October 1945. He attained the rank of sergeant and received the Asiatics Pacific ribbon with 4 bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Campaign ribbon with 2 bronze stars. Mr. Ziel began his career in law enforcement in 1946 with the Chicago Park District Police Department; receiving the 1947 Hero Award for distinguished police service and three Merit Awards for exceptional police service. Walter received a diploma in Police Administration from Northwestern University Traffic Institute in Evanston, IL in 1951. From 1957 until 1962 Walt was an Illinois State Police officer and he was a police officer for the Grand Rapids Police Vice Squad from 1962 to 1963. Mr. Ziel received his B.S. degree in Business Management from Indiana University in 1969 and was an instructor for the Indiana University Department of Police Administration Center for Police Training from 1962 to 1970. Walt Ziel received his M.P.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1975. From February of 1970 until his retirement in 1985, he was an Associate Professor for the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As part of his career, he was a pioneer and leader of training in chemical tests for intoxication and was instrumental in setting up law enforcement training programs for breath alcohol testing nationwide. Mr. Ziel was a member of the National Safety Council Committee on Alcohol and Drugs, the NSCC Ad Hoc Sub-Committee on Training Standards for Breath-Test Operators, and the NSCC Executive Board. He was a consultant to Bridgeport, CT and Washington, D.C. police departments and a member of the Illinois Department of Public Health's Committee on Standards and Training and the International Conference on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety. His publication co-authoring contributions included a series of twelve articles on ''Police Problems'' in Law and Order magazine and '' The Role of the Drinking Driver in Traffic Accidents.'' Mr. Ziel was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Chapel in Necedah, WI and is survived by his wife, Marian, 12 children, 13 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His surviving daughters are: Karen Branding (Lake Zurich, IL), Helen Changelon (Wonder Lake, IL), Joan Wallrich (Antioch, IL), Deborah Johnson (Beaverton, OR), Diane Ziel (Portland, OR) and Barbara Ziel (Brooklyn, NY). He is further survived by one brother, Joseph Ziel (Bradenton, FL). In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Ziel, who died in the Vietnam War in 1971. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Chapel in Necedah, Wisconsin. Father Hector Bolduc will officiate. Burial will follow in the Queen of the Holy Rosary Mediatrix of Peace Cemetery in Necedah. Relatives and friends are welcome for visitation on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. at the Torkelson Necedah Family Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are also invited for visitation on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. The Torkelson Necedah Family Funeral Home in Necedah is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Doctors Without Borders organization in memory of Walter.
