Motion Picture Producer, Film Editor. Born into a Jewish family who immigrated to the United States in 1914, he began his film career as an errand boy at Metro Studios when he was sixteen. He was an editor of 13 silent films, including the 1925 version of "The Wizard of Oz." With the start of the talkie movies, he became a producer. He produced 25 films, including "Tortilla Flat" in 1942, "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" in 1944, and "Ben-Hur" which was released in 1959. Zimbalist died during the filming of "Ben-Hur," supposedly of a heart attack related to stress. He was posthumously awarded the Best Picture Academy Award for "Ben-Hur."
