Adalbert Koestner, age 85, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2006 at Westminster Thurber Village after an extended illness. He was born on September 10, 1920 in Hatzfeld, Romania, received his professional education in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Munich in 1951 and had a veterinary practice in the Bavarian Forest. He was married to Heidi Wacker in 1951 and they immigrated to Columbus, Ohio in 1955. Their children, George and Rosemarie were born in 1953 and 1958. Bert attended OSU and received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. He was a member of the OSU faculty for 26 years, attaining the rank of Professor in 1964 and served as Chairman of the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology for ten years. He and Heidi moved to Michigan in 1981 where Bert served as Chairman of the Department of Pathology for eight years until his retirement when he returned to OSU as Professor Emeritus. He was a member of numerous professional societies and a recipient of a number of honors including the Weil Award of the American Association of Neuropathologists, Gaines Award from the American Veterinary Medical Association, Distinguished Member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, Distinguished Alumnus of the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Temesvar, Romania. He is survived by his wife, Heidi Koestner; daughter, Rosemarie Koestner-Oriold; and son-in-law, Josef Oriold. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. A private interment will be held for the family at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery.
