William "Bill" Tharp Sr., 82, of Bryan passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, October 11, at Hillier Funeral Home with interment following at Bryan City Cemetery. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 10, at the funeral home.

Bill was born on March 24, 1926, in Waco, Texas, and was raised in Caldwell, Texas. He was a graduate of Caldwell High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was awarded the APO ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He worked for the Texas Highway Patrol for more than eight years and was retired from Alenco after more than 39 years. He received the Division Driver of the Year award in 1984 and was placed as one of the top four nationwide in 1984. He had more than two million safety miles.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved fishing and playing Dominoes and Canasta. He was a member of the Cedar Creek Masonic Lodge and Trinity Baptist Church in Bryan.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Odell and Bessie Mae (Storm) Tharp and sons, William "Bill" K. Tharp Jr. and William Vernon Wilkerson.

Survivors include his wife, LaVerne (Shafer) Tharp; daughter-in-law, Patsy Tharp; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Ron Jetton of Katy; sons and daughters-in-law, Art and Jennifer Wilkerson of Niederwald, Texas, and Randle and Lisa Wilkerson of Bryan; grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and David Kitchens of College Station, Stacy and Billy Garrett of Waco, Texas, Kirk and Lysa Coleman of Houston, William "Monty" and Jessica Wood Tharp of Bryan, Leslie and Richard Bebber of Houston, Vernon Lee Wilkerson and girlfriend, Shelly, Billy and Lora Wilkerson, Crystal Wilkerson and Grady Luce and Robby Wilkerson and girlfriend, Shawna, all of Bryan; numerous great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Lewis Odell and Gladys Tharp of Caldwell; beloved poodle, Inky; five wonderful sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Sherwood Nursing Home and the Rev. Henry Stovall of Trinity Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
