Vernard M. "Vern" Guyer, Jr., 87, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at a Topeka hospital. He was born April 3, 1924 in Topeka, the son of Vernard M. and Elizabeth C. Desch Guyer.

He graduated from Capital Catholic High School and attended the University of Kansas. Vern then joined the Navy during WWII. After he was discharged from the Navy, he went to work for a surveying company that was involved in the Kansas Turnpike construction for several years. He then went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he was employed for over 40 years before retiring. Vern was member of Mater Dei Holy Name Church, the Knights of Columbus Topeka Council No. 534, The Telephone Pioneers and was a member of Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He also served as a Troop Leader in Salina and Topeka.

Vern married Magdalena Weigel on October 11, 1952 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Janet (Edward) Gardiner, Paul (Sheila) Guyer, Mark (Teri) Guyer and Rita (Chris) Brault, nine grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Donna, Rachel, Ryan, Matthew, Anne, Marc and Aaron and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Mater Dei Holy Name Church, 1114 S.W. 10th Ave. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
