He was born in Wirt County March 10, 1898, son of the late J.W. and Sarah Tichenor Tanner. He was a retired oil field worker, and a member of the Burning Springs Methodist Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Cora Evans Tanner; six sons, Jesse Tanner of Ohio, Ralph Tanner of Texas, Alvin Tanner of Minnesota, Morris Tanner of Ohio, Herbert Tanner, Jr., of Parkersburg, and Richard Tanner, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Eva Russell of Ohio, Mary and Carol Tanner, at home. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Ruby McMillan, Mrs. Emma Farmer, and Mrs. Eloise Orr, all of Ohio. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Burning Springs Methodist Church with the Rev. S.A. Scott and the Rev. Paul Higgins officiating. Interment was in the Burning Springs Cemetery. McCray Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
