Bolt Kills Farmer, Winds Batter Area

Capricious winds that gusted as high as 75 miles per hour Friday night scattered tree limbs like twigs but did not cause much major storm damage in the Carroll area.

The Friday night storm was an aftermath of a hard blow during the afternoon that tore the roof off a storage building behind the Carroll Bowling Alley and blew out plate glass windows in the McCoy Motors' used car building and at the Carroll public school.

Killed By Lightning

One area fatality was recorded Friday afternoon when Edward Drees, 32, Manning, was killed instantly by lightning while on a tractor. Drees was working in a field on a farm owned by Mrs. Rose Gavin and located about seven miles south of Manning.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Lamp of Manning, a daughter Barbara, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Drees of Exira, four brothers and three sisters. The body is at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.

Military funeral rites will be held at 9 am Monday at Sacred Heart Church at Manning, with the Rev. Thomas Molloy officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manning. The rosary will be recited at 8:30 pm Saturday, at 3 and 7:30 pm Sunday at the Ohde Funeral Home, led by Fr. Molloy.
