Christian was born in the village of Schleitheim, in Canton Schaffhuasen, Switzerland on December 15, 1832, not in 1835 as the tombstone suggests. He was the son of Hans Ulrich Wanner and Margaretha Russenberger. We do not know when he immigrated to America, but he was married to Ursula Maeder in the Etna Congregational Church on September 20, 1965. The couple had 6 children: Anna Margaretha, Maria Christina, Emma Elizabetha, Johann Heinrich Christian, Margaretha Mathilda and Heinrich Wilhelm. Christian appears on very few census records, but he seemed to be living in Sharpsburg most of the time, and working in one of the mills. His death was not recorded in the church record book, so perhaps the couple had started to attend one of the many churches in Sharpsburg. He died on January 1, 1885 as recorded by his daughter, Anna Wanner Wikert.
