Philosopher. One of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century, Heidegger's work paved the way for such writers and movements as Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism, Jacques Derrida's deconstructionism, and Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology. His best known work is probably 1927's "Being and Time", which established new methods for interrogating the meaning of being and introduced many new modes of analysis that are now commonplace. In mid-career, however, Heidegger embraced Nazism, feeling that Hitler's call to live in the ways of folk tradition was the solution to the meaninglessness that Heidegger saw at the core of everyday life. Heidigger differed from Hitler, however, in that he felt war was absurd rather than glorious. Banned from teaching after World War II, Heidegger was gradually redeemed in academic circles and was again accepted as a giant in his field at the time of his death.
