Marie French
Marie French, 85, of Marcus and former longtime Meriden area resident, died Wednesday, November 10th at 1 p.m. in the Heartland Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13 at 10.30 a.m. at the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church with Rev Patricia Cox and Rev. Bob Blair officiating. Burial will be in the Meriden Cemetery.
There will be a family prayer service at 10 15 a.m. at the church on Saturday.
Visitation will be on Friday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at
the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Marie was born on December 28, 1918 to Chris and Agnes (Andersen) Nielsen on a rural Meriden farm. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1937 and then attended Nettleton Business Training in Sioux City. After completion of business school Marie worked for H.J. Heinz Co. in Sioux City as a secretary for several years.
She married Leo French on April 11, 1943 at Marcus. Leo was in the Army and she went to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. to be with him before he transferred to England. Their first child was born while he was oversees and four more children were born to them in the years to follow. Marie was bookkeeper for R & M Feed Service for several years, her strongest priority,was her family. Marie had a strong faith and she shared this faith by serving as a Sunday School teacher and taught confirmation class when the church was
without a pastor. Marie often hosted relatives who
came back to the farm to visit. She was an excellent cook (especially her breads), an avid sports fan, loved music and playing cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on October 24, 2000, two brothers Anders and Niels Nielsen and two sisters Elisabeth Pedersen and Anna Mae Wilcox.
She is survived by five children: Janet (Gerald) Lundquist of Cleghorn; Jean (John) Salzwedel of DeForest, Wisc; Bruce
(Julie) French of Meriden; Carol (Tom) Waldack of Hopkins, Minn.; Shirley (Rich) Foerster of Sun Prairie, Wisc, and Paul Meyer of Alden, Minn.; eight grandchildren: Brian
Lundquist and Christine Feltman of Paullina; Anne Rolli of Rochester, Minn.; Lori Smithback of Madison, Wise; John C. Salzwedel of Columbus, Wise; Michael Salzwedel of Sun Prairie, Wise; Kelsey and Katelyn Meyer of Sun Prairie; seven great grandchildren: Tylyn and Jacob Lundquist of
Paullina, Jessie, Nicole and Levi Feltman of Paullina;
Corey Smithback of Madison, Wisc; Alexandra Rolli of Rochester, Minn.; four sisters: Margaret (Stanley) Birch of Cleghorn; Esther (Edgar) of Marcus; Vera (Donald) Wiese of
Larrabee and Elna Lundell of Livingston, Wisc.
