Last Rites Held Monday For John Gerdes

While at his farm south of Miller last Thursday afternoon, John D. Gerdes, 76, was stricken with a heart attack and died suddenly.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, at the First United Methodist church, the Rev. Richard Trotter officiating. Interment was made in the G.A.R. Cemetery.

Active casket bearers were Marvin Oligmueller, Albert Jones, Myron Waring, Alvie Haberling, Kenneth Gard and Roy Yearous. Serving in an honorary capacity were Nels Jacobsen, Dorcie Jenkins, Harry Wilson, Lawrence Ruhnke, George Ufen, Glen Skinner, Sanford Hines and Howard Fountain.

Gerdes had been a resident of Hand County and Miller since 1910. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gerdes, he was born May 20, 1896, at Burlington, Iowa. He came to Hand County when a boy of fourteen, and spent the rest of his life here. June 2, 1921, he was married to Flossie Millsap, and they were the parents, of two daughters and two sons. They farmed three and a half miles south of Miller from 1922 until 1961, when he retired from farming, and he and his wife moved to Miller.

Surviving are his widow, one son, James, Miller; two daughters, Mrs. Theron Phinney, Miller and Mrs. Russell Wylie, Claremore, Okla.; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren, and six sisters, Mrs. Edward Bender and Mrs. Carl Magnuson, Burlington, Iowa; Mrs. James Corr, Mitchell; Mrs. Augusta Wegener, St. Paul; Mrs. Wallace Nord, Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Mata Heitmeier, Yarmouth, Iowa.

His parents, one son, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
