Mr. John Bittner died at his home at Shaw Station on Friday, Jan. 28th, at the age of 55 years. He was well known in this city and locality where he spent most of his life.
The deceased was born in Lee County, north of Mendota and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Bittner. He grew to manhood and was engaged in farming in which he was very successful. Sixteen years ago he was united in marriage to Mrs. Stauffer. There were no children. He was a man of kind disposition and generous as well as honorable in all of his business dealings. In his neighborhood he was respected and his home life was pleasant. He was ill but five days the cause of death being the flu. Everything was done for his relief but it seemed that nothing that human skill could do counted for aught and the Grim Reaper claimed him as his own.
Besides the sorrowing widow there is left one step-daughter, as well as the following brothers and sisters; Mr. Ed. Bittner, of Fontanelle, Iowa; Mrs. Carrie Erskin, of Lincoln, Neb.; Miss Barbara Bittner and Mr. Wm. Bittner of Mendota; Mrs. Lucy Haefner of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mrs. Julius Barnickel, of West Brooklyn and Harry Bittner of Mendota.
The funeral services were held at the late home at Shaw Station, Monday, and the remains were brought to Mendota where short services were held at the grave at Restland where interment was made.
The sympathy of the many friends are extended to the bereaved ones.
