Rudolf Schulte, 73, Died Saturday In Dodge City Hospital*

Rudolf Schulte, 73, died Saturday [September 6, 1958] afternoon in St. Anthony Hospital [Dodge City, Kansas] where he had been a patient for treatment. He was a retired farmer.

Mr. Schulte was born July 26, 1885 [sixth son of Hermann Heinrich and Anna Margarethe (Düthmann) Schulte], in Dörpen, Germany. As a young man he learned the brick laying and plasterer’s trade. In 1905 he was drafted into the German army and served until 1907 as a member of the Prussian Guard in Berlin. He then worked at his trade until December 1908, when he sailed for the United States, January 3, 1909, and went to Decatur, Ill., where a sister, Sister Monica [given name Maria], was stationed. She had come to the United States eight years earlier when she joined the convent [Third Order of Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, O.S.F].

In March 1909, Mr. Schulte came to Windthorst [Kansas] where his father’s brother, Rudolph Schulte, and his father’s half-brother, Ben Tieben, Sr., lived. Miss Frances Droste and Mr. Schulte were married at Windthorst in July [31]. 1912 [Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, added to National Register of Historic Places, 1989]. They lived on the Herman Wesler farm in the Windthorst community until March 1926 then moved to a farm four miles west of Spearville. In 1944 they retired and moved to home at 1007 Avenue A [Dodge City, Kansas].

Mrs. Schulte passed away December 4, 1957.

Mr. Schulte was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic parish. He was an honorary member of the Dodge City council. Knights of Columbus, and of the Holy Name Society.

Survivors are six sons, Henry, Bernard and Clarence of Spearville, Joseph and John of Stratton, Colo., and Raymond of Arriba, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. Bill Stegman of Offerle and Sister M. Sylvana of Wichita; two brothers, Bernard and Hermann, who live in Germany; two sisters, Mrs. Thekla Bröker, who lives in Germany and Sister Monica, O.F.S., of Springfield, Ill., and 37 grandchildren. Also surviving is a nephew, Henry Keller, who made his home with the Schultes after coming to this country [March 1921, son of Rudolf’s sister Angela] from Germany as a young man.

The rosary was recited at the Hulpieu-Swaim Funeral home Sunday and Monday [September 7 and September 8 respectively] evenings. The Requiem Mass was at 9:30 Tuesday [September 9] in Sacred Heart Cathedral [Dodge City, Kansas] with the Right Rev. Msgr. J.J. Grellner as celebrant. The Rev. Arnold Weller of Spearville was deacon; the Rev. Henry Hussman, subdeacon, and the Rev. Fred Tuzicka, master of ceremonies. Burial was in St. Johns cemetery at Spearville.
