Marguerithe was born in Seltz, Bas-Rhin, Alsace to Charles Louis Lefevre and Marie Ann Hoerd. She emigrated in 1827 with her mother, her brother, Charles Napoleon, and her sister, Caroline, all of whom settled in Pennsylvania. Although Marguerithe and her siblings were born in France to a French father, they spoke only German, their mother's native tongue.
