John married Lucinda Williams (1831-1894) in DeKalb Indiana in May of 1851. Three children: Francis, Milo, and Rachel.

He enlisted as a Sergeant for the Union on 22 November 1861 (Civil War).
He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 20 Mar 1862.
He was promoted to Full Captain on 28 Feb 1863.

He was killed as a member of Company F, 44th Infantry Regiment Indiana (Union) on 20 Sep 1863 at Chickamauga, GA
