George Kimmerle (his last name is actually Kümerle) and his daughter Maria. For Maria, I see the word, GEB (geboren), which means born in German. The 1880 census doesn't show Maria at all. Furthermore, I was puzzled George and Dorothea's daughter, Carlina/Carolina, was born in about 1862. George did not marry Dorothea until 1869. I just happened to come across the 1870 census, and found both Maria Kimmerle, aged 13, and Carolina Kimmerle, aged 8, as inmates at an orphanage in Ohio. That blew my mind. Now I realized that George was previously married. I guess his wife died, and he couldn't take care of the girls. How he ended up in Iowa and marrying Dorothea I don't know. He must have returned to Ohio to retrieve the girls. Looking at the tombstone, I started to wonder if GEB is actually GES. GEST. (gestorben) in German means died. Maybe there is no room for GEST. for Maria so the person responsible for the tombstone probably engraved only GES? It is hard for me to tell whether it is GEB or GES which is why I would like to ask and see if you can tell. If it is indeed GEB, then Maria was born on June 23, 1872, and died on May 23, 1888 (15 years and 11 months). If it is GES, then that means Maria died on June 23, 1872. Based on her age at the time of her death, she would have been born on July 23, 1856. She was about 13 years old in the above mentioned 1870 census so I am leaning toward GES being engraved on the tombstone but need your confirmation. If she was born in 1872, she wouldn't be at the orphanage with her sister. Oh, by the way, both were born in Germany.

Maria Kimmerle, who is also buried in the same place as George. Through research on Ancestry.com, I have discovered that Maria was born on 4 Apr 1858 in Denzlingen, Baden, Germany to Georg Kümmerle and Anna Maria Nübling. She was baptized on 7 Jul 1858, at Evangelische Kirche Denzlingen, Baden, Germany. Her sister, Caroline, was also born to the same parents on 12 Aug 1861, also in Denzligen, Karlsruhe, Baden Germany. I have added all of this information to my Ancestry tree. In addition to Maria and Caroline, George and Anna Maria also had other children: Johann, Friedricka and Mathias. Johann and Mathias both died in Germany. Friericka died in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the same orphanage that Maria and Caroline stayed at.
